Reddit’s biggest crypto subreddit is hosting a competition to rebrand the logo of its native MOON token in an effort to avoid IP complications — and sell some merch.

MOON could previously be distributed, traded, or spent as part of Reddit’s blockchain-based community points program but the platform officially ended its involvement with the project in November last year. However, it didn’t disappear entirely and moderators were given permission to run it without Reddit’s input.

According to thread moderator ‘GabeSter,’ when Reddit ceased work on MOON, it never clarified the exact rights behind the logo’s usage. “To free ourselves from any unforeseen IP limitations (now or later) we are inviting users to reimagine the MOON logo,” they explained.

GabeSter also noted that Reddit let them use the logo in accordance with its brand guidelines which, they claimed, allows them to work with a third party to sell MOON-inspired merch.

There’s unlikely to be any grand reimagining, however, as the competition requires the new logo to be ‘familiar looking.’ An example for entrants was posted in r/CryptoCurrency on July 12 and the changes are barely noticeable.

GabeSter announced on Tuesday that would-be designers have just six days left to submit their entries. Moderators will reportedly reject any designs that use AI-generated images.

Multiple r/Cryptocurrency moderators were fired around the time of MOON’s initial closure for allegedly dumping their holdings before the news broke. The token’s price currently sits at $0.1146, up 235% since it crashed on October 18, 2023. It is, however, down 83% since its all-time high of $0.6737 in March this year.
